RABDF Response: 2019 General Election Result.

16 December, 19

Following yesterday’s General Election result we would like to congratulate Boris Johnson and his Conservative Government on securing a majority Parliament.

We will continue to work closely with his Government over the coming months and years to represent the needs of UK dairy farmers.

With Brexit due to take place on 31 January we will look to the Government to ensure the needs of recruiting overseas workers is a priority and will endeavour to get Dairy Herdsman added to the Shortage Occupation List – the only option to prevent many efficient dairy farmers going out of business.

Previous overseas work we have carried out saw 56% of respondents employing staff from outside the UK, with many of these in skilled or highly skilled roles – highlights the requirement of Government to distinguish between the need for full time staff rather than seasonal workers on dairy farms.

Whilst we will continue with existing work we will also be focusing our upcoming policy around the environmental challenges ahead. With Defra’s Clean Air Strategy set to significantly impact dairy farmers we look forward to working with the Government to move forward constructively and efficiently in order to meet the tight net zero targets in place.
