Innovation And Style Combine To Scoop The Carton Of The Year Award.

Printpark’s Gabrini In Love EDT scooped the prestigious title Carton of the Year at the 2019 European Carton Excellence Awards (ECEA). The stand-out packaging not only perfectly showcased cartonboard’s versatility as a packaging material, but also demonstrated that it can be innovative and exciting.

In fact, In Love EDT was selected as the winner because the judges were bowled over by its eye-catching design; the unusually shaped pack is encrusted with crystal rhinestones – something rarely seen on cartonboard packaging – with holographic printing on the inside.

The ECEAs are Europe’s most respected annual packaging awards. Organised by Pro Carton and the European Carton Makers Associations (ECMA), every year they reveal the best packaging innovation using cartonboard. And with 2020 awards now open to entries, Printpark – which is headquartered in Istanbul – shared the secrets of its awards success.

Managing Director of Printpark, Ferit Dansik, said:

“Our R&D team had been working on rhinestone applications on cartonboard for some time so when Gabrini asked us to create a completely innovative pack that they’d never seen before we showed them the rhinestones and they instantly fell in love with it.

“Our design team then suggested that we create a special-shape carton rather than a typical rectangular box. It works because it looks like a diamond itself and is different to anything else on the market. Finally, the customer asked us to make the pack look as good on the inside as on the outside, so we used a metallic holograph finish so that when the carton is opened it shines – perfectly mirroring the rhinestones on the outside.”

And Mr Dansik reveals this is, in fact, the third Excellence award that Printpark has won:

“We were winners in the Beauty & Cosmetics category twice before – in 2009, when we were the first Turkish converter to win an award, and in 2016. But this is the first time we’ve taken the top prize of Carton of the Year – and we are the first Turkish converter to win it. It’s really amazing and has made a great impact. There was a huge amount of excitement throughout the business and we barely slept the night we found out we’d won!”

Mr. Dansik says his company plans to promote the packs at a variety of exhibitions and events in the coming months, including at Packaging Eurasia, Packaging Innovations Birmingham and Interpack Dusseldorf.

Ritva Mönkäre, Communications Manager for Metsä Board, explains more about the cartonboard material used and what makes it so special: “For this project Printpark used MetsäBoard Prime FBB Bright 355 g/m2. This is our flagship grade that has high brightness, whiteness and stiffness. It enables luxurious designs and special features, which is the reason it works so well in premium packaging such as Gabrini’s In Love.”

Metsä Board also took home four other awards in the 2019 awards, and Ms. Mönkäre says this success was in part down to the fact that more and more businesses are looking to replace non-renewable materials, while still providing quality packaging that protects products and looks great.

“Premium, fresh fibre paperboard is well positioned to meet these requirements and when combined with cutting-edge carton design the benefits are universal – as proved by the quality of entries in this year’s awards,”

she says.

The 2020 Awards are now open for entries and close on May 21, 2020. Winners will be announced at the prestigious gala dinner during the ECMA Congress on 17 and 18 September 2020 in Krakow, Poland.
