This Easter, Waitrose & Partners is introducing a hot cross bun spiced cheese to its shelves and it’s the perfect way to spice up a cheese board for Easter gatherings.
It may sound like a seasonal mix up, but the combination of subtle seasonal spices, zesty candied orange peel and plump sultanas blended with creamy Yorkshire Wensleydale makes a un-eggs-pected cheese delight.
Alice Shrubsall, cheese buyer at Waitrose & Partners, says “Sweet treats often go hand in hand with Easter celebrations, it’s a sweet-toothed shoppers favourite season. But we wanted to give shoppers who enjoy the more savoury things in life an Easter treat too.
“Easter is the second biggest occasion of the year for family gatherings, so we know our shoppers are on the look-out for something unique to serve their guests. They come to our specialist counters to find something inspirational, guided by the knowledge of our expert Partners.
“This cheese is a great example of this. The sweet ingredients work really well with a rich, creamy cheese like Wensleydale, so we’ve combined the taste of one of our shoppers favourite Easter treats with the cheese. The result is a surprisingly delicate spiced cheese, a perfect grown-up alternative to chocolate.”
Shoppers at the supermarket have sent sales of seasonal cheese soaring, up over 200% on last year, as they look for more unusual and interesting flavour combinations. This seasonally spiced Wensleydale is created by cheesemakers at The Wensleydale Creamery, an award-winning, independent traditional cheese-maker who are specialists at blending cheese with unusual ingredients to create innovative flavours and recipes.
The once niche cheese has enjoyed continued popularity after receiving the seal of approval from much-loved cartoon character Wallace, who shared his enthusiasm for Wensleydale with the nation and the cheese continues to prove a popular choice at the supermarket.
Launching on the Waitrose & Partners cheese counters and available online at Waitrose.com from 4th April, the Hot Cross Bun Yorkshire Wensleydale Truckle 200g is priced at £3.
